Functional Integration®

Functional Integration®

Functional Integration®, often called FI, is the individual, hands-on form of the Feldenkrais Method®.

FI is a movement-learning process grounded in the brain’s lifelong capacity to learn and reorganize—known as neuroplasticity. Through gentle, non-invasive touch and movement, the practitioner helps the client notice habitual ways of organizing themselves and explore new possibilities for more efficient, comfortable, and effective functioning.

The emphasis is not on correcting the body or forcing a result. It is on working with what is available in the present moment, so that new patterns of movement, attention, and self-use can emerge.

What happens in an FI lesson?

We begin with a conversation about what brings you in, what you would like to improve, and which activities or movements matter most to you.

This is followed by an initial movement assessment. Through observation and gentle, hands-on exploration, I notice what appears easy and light, what seems difficult or effortful, what is currently available to you, and what may not yet be accessible.

Based on this assessment and our discussion, we sketch a preliminary plan for the work. This is not a fixed protocol. It continues to evolve from lesson to lesson as your awareness, options, and function develop, and as new questions or possibilities emerge.

During the lesson, I use gentle touch, movement, and occasional verbal guidance to help you notice how different parts of yourself work together. A lesson may explore how you turn your head, use your back, shift weight, breathe, reach, walk, sit, or get up and down from the floor.

As awareness becomes more refined, you may recognize habitual patterns that use unnecessary effort or limit your options. The lesson offers a way to experiment with alternatives and improve the quality and efficiency of function in ways that are meaningful to you.

There is no pushing, forcing, stretching, or attempt to make your body conform to a predetermined ideal. You remain an active participant, and your comfort, consent, and feedback guide the lesson throughout.

Who is FI for?

FI is for anyone seeking individual support to improve function, comfort, coordination, mobility, or confidence in movement—especially when particular movements feel difficult, effortful, restricted, or unavailable.

People come to FI for many reasons:

  • To explore greater ease in walking, reaching, turning, breathing, sitting, or getting up and down
  • To improve how they function in daily activities
  • To become more aware of habitual movement patterns and discover alternatives
  • To support balance, mobility, coordination, and confidence
  • To return gently to movement after injury, illness, surgery, or a period of reduced activity
  • To complement medical care, rehabilitation, or another movement practice
  • To receive an individualized introduction to the Feldenkrais Method®

Functional Integration is an educational process. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace medical care. If you have an acute injury, a serious medical concern, or symptoms that have not been evaluated, please consult an appropriate health professional.

What to wear

Clients remain fully clothed throughout every FI lesson. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily.

Sessions generally last about an hour.

FI and ATM

Functional Integration and Awareness Through Movement® are complementary forms of the Feldenkrais Method®.

FI offers one-to-one learning shaped around your interests, circumstances, and current possibilities. Awareness Through Movement®, or ATM®, offers guided learning in a group through verbal instruction.

Some people begin with FI and later join an ATM class. Others use both forms at different times. There is no required sequence; together, we can choose the form that best supports your learning now.
