Awareness Through Movement®

Awareness Through Movement®

Awareness Through Movement®, often called ATM, is the group-learning form of the Feldenkrais Method®.

In an ATM lesson, I guide you verbally through a sequence of gentle movements and invite you to notice what you feel. A lesson may explore a particular area—such as the hips, shoulders, neck, back, or pelvis—or an everyday action such as turning, reaching, walking, breathing, or getting up and down from the floor.

The purpose is not to perform a movement perfectly or to push yourself further. It is to become curious about how you move, sense differences, and discover options that may feel easier, lighter, or more comfortable.

What happens in a class?

Most lessons last about an hour. You may work lying on a mat, sitting in a chair, standing, or in another position that is appropriate and comfortable for you.

I offer suggestions rather than demonstrations to copy. There is no single correct way to do a lesson, and you are always encouraged to move within your own comfort and capacity. Pausing, resting, imagining a movement, or choosing a smaller version of it are all part of the learning.

ATM is not a workout, stretching class, or performance. The movements are usually small, unhurried, and designed to invite attention rather than effort.

A common invitation in Feldenkrais is to do less and feel more. As you explore, you may notice familiar movement habits and discover alternatives that support greater ease, coordination, and comfort in daily life.

Who is it for?

ATM is for people of many ages, backgrounds, and levels of physical ability. You do not need to be fit, flexible, athletic, or experienced with movement practices.

People come for many reasons:

  • To move with greater ease, comfort, or confidence
  • To explore balance, mobility, coordination, and everyday function
  • To become more aware of habitual patterns of tension or effort
  • To support a return to movement after a period of inactivity, injury, illness, or change
  • To complement other forms of care, rehabilitation, or physical practice
  • To enjoy a quieter, more attentive relationship with themselves

Feldenkrais is an educational practice, not medical diagnosis or treatment. If you have a complex injury, acute condition, significant chronic pain, or specific medical concerns, an individual Functional Integration® lesson—or consultation with an appropriate health professional—may be the better place to begin.

General classes and special series

I offer general Awareness Through Movement classes as well as occasional themed series. Each class is an opportunity to learn through movement, attention, and your own direct experience.

Some series have a particular focus or established lineage, including Rejuvenate, Pregnant Pauses, and Happy Hips. You can learn more about those offerings through their individual pages.

An invitation

Come as you are, wear comfortable clothing, and bring a willingness to be curious.

You do not need to know what you are doing before you begin. The lesson is a chance to slow down, notice, and discover what becomes possible when you give yourself time to learn.
